I was sitting at lunch during a get-to-know you meeting, sharing about my transition from Wall Street marketing executive to Life Purpose speaker, coach and hand analyst. My lunch date looked perplexed and proceeded to tell me in an exasperated tone that I was throwing away my prestigious Ivy League education and decades of marketing expertise. After her tongue-lashing, she folded her arms and said, How do you explain yourself?” Does this sound familiar? Have you embarked on a new adventure – taken on a new hobby, launched a side business or abandoned your current work to embark upon a new career. Despite your myriad of achievements and accolades, you’re no longer content to follow someone else’s rules. You’re ready to play your own game! You’ve always been successful so expect to be greeted with congratulations and atta-girls but your family and friends are not supportive and peer at you suspiciously as if you’ve suddenly grown a tail. You’re excited, curious and have grown somewhat comfortable with navigating this unchartered territory but your inner circle is not. And they are not afraid to say so. They want to know what’s happened to you, if you’re alright, if you know what you’re doing and when are you going to come to your senses! Know that you are not alone. You’re living in a brave new world — one that your loved ones may not understand. This is not the world of your parents where you worked for an employer for 30 years and were greeted on the back end with a retirement party, social security and pension. You are living in a world where those social contracts have been broken. The result is you are faced with a new reality, one where there is no such thing as security and there are no guarantees. What you are experiencing is normal. Like all heroines (yes, that’s you!), when you set out on a new adventure you are going to be challenged. You are being initiated. It’s now your job to slay the dragons – some real and some imagined to prove to the Universe that you are committed and really want it! As you continue to make your way, it will become easier, not as scary as you once thought. You are being led by commitment, courage and spiritual support. You don’t have to explain. And it’s a waste of time to attempt to do so. Those questions are about the person who is doing the asking. They are subtext and code for, “You are so brave for following your dreams. I’m not. Are you going to leave me?” I won’t leave you. I won’t make you wrong for wanting to live your life on your terms. I’m on your team and we’re on this life purpose journey together. Until next time… BE AMAZING!
